2019 FAQ

When and where is Lone Star Zine Fest happening?

This year’s Fest happens Sunday, September 1, 2019, 2-8pm. So far, each version of the Fest has had a unique flavor. The first was at Cheer Up Charlie’s and was fun, and hot! The second was at the North Door, less hot, and more fun! This year, we are going to try a new concept: the crawl!

More than 20 zine creators will be selling their work at tables scattered throughout six different local establishments – King Bee Lounge, Full Circle Bar, Sans Bar, Dozen Street, Northern-Southern gallery, and Leona Gallery – all near the intersection of 12th & Chicon in central East Austin. Check out the gorgeous map Christopher Specht made to help you navigate the Fest!

At the Fest, you’ll get to meet zine creators, buy zines from them, learn about local zine libraries, learn to make a zine of your very own, and maybe even win a door prize! Last year, over 400 enthusiastic folks attended the Fest to meet zine artists, purchase their work, rub shoulders with other zine fans, and celebrate the Central Texas zine scene.

How much does it cost to attend Lone Star Zine Fest?

Nothing, y’all! Admission is FREE, but make sure to bring some bucks because you’re gonna want to buy a bunch of zines, and maybe have a drink or a snack. Many exhibitors will be equipped to take credit cards, and there are ATMs nearby, but if you wanna be on the safe side, BRING CA$H.

Where should I park?

There are three parking lots available for LSZF attendees free of charge! Two are on the southeast corner of 12th & Chicon (the little dirt lot right on the corner, and the larger paved on that envelops it. The third is the wood-n-metal-fenced dirt lot on the northeast corner of 12th & Selina (entrance on Selina). There is also lots of street parking along 12th, and on the nearby side streets. The #6 and #322 buses stop at the intersection, too!

Is there gonna be Fest merch?

Heck yeah there is! Obsolete Industries will at Leona Gallery selling LSZF logo tote bags & tees for $10. And/or bring your own tee/tote/bandanna/dog and they’ll screen print it for just $5! A limited number of posters will also be available. All profits help keep Lone Star Zine Fest going, so bring that ca$h, y’all!

What about refreshments?

All the venues except Northern-Southern & Leona Gallery are bars, so all your beer/wine/cocktail desires will be fulfilled! Sans Bar is an alcohol-free bar, and the other bars have non-alcoholic offerings, too. (On that note, King Bee Lounge is 21+, so kids won’t be allowed in. Dozen Street & Full Circle are generously going all-ages for this event, and they implore you to refrain from even thinking about drinking if you are underage, since their licenses are on the line.)

Hungry? Full Circle Bar has a super Sunday brunch, and King Bee Lounge makes amazing pizzas. Several nearby establishments also serve food including: Big Easy Bar & Grill, Sassy’s Vegetarian Soul Food, Bacchus & Brown, Mumbai Street, Chicken Lollypop, Popalicious Popcorn, and Sam’s BBQ.

Q: Who is organizing this event?

The Fest is organized by a small group of zine-loving volunteers who are passionate about creating space for zine creators and zine fans to come together. We need a few volunteers, so click here if you are interested in helping out with the Fest!

– Exhibitor FAQ –

Do I have to sign up to participate, or can I just show up?

Good question! Applications for the 2019 Fest are closed, but we’ll be planning for the 2020 Fest before you know it, so check back later this fall if you want to participate…

How much does it cost to participate in Lone Star Zine Fest?

This year, the table fee to exhibit/sell zines ranges from $5 to $20. The Fest is still free for the public to attend.

How early can I start setting up? Relatedly, what time do I need to be set up and ready for the public? And how about take-down & cleanup?

Exhibitors will get more detailed information via email leading up to the Fest, and much will depend on the venue. When you arrive, you’ll check in with the organizers and get your table assignment, then get to setting up. We’ll have a short, but invigorating (and informational) pep rally before we open the doors. Please plan to stay for the entire event. We want attendees to have the best experience possible and that means lots of stuff to see/do/buy!
